CALL COMMITTEE UPDATE
The call committee last November prayerfully discerned that none of the candidates they were considering were good matches for the Pastor of New Communities position. Since then, no additional names have come forward from the synod office. We are hopeful that with the placement of seminarians graduating this spring, we may have another slate of names to consider by February or March. Please continue to pray for the call committee in their discernment process, and also pray for all those pastoral candidates considering calls to our synod or to a mission developer position such as ours.
The Pastor of New Communities Call Committee received the profiles of four candidates from Bishop Girlinghouse. The Call Committee met on Monday, 9/17 to discuss the profiles and to discern next steps on each candidate. The Call Committee and Council held a joint devotion and prayer session at the start of the regularly scheduled Council meeting. We ask for continued prayer from the congregation for the Call Committee and for the candidate that God is calling for us. We also ask for prayers for the communities that will be touched by this ministry of Good Shepherd.
The call committee anticipates receiving a second set of candidates from the bishop’s office by the end of the month. Please continue to pray for the call committee in their discernment, as well as potential candidates in their call process. We believe the Spirit is at work preparing the right person to accept the call to serve as Pastor of New Communities with us, and we hope it will be soon.
In the meantime, we have made great strides at developing new ministries in the university context. Almost all of these are lay led ministries, and we are so thankful for the leadership of members of this congregation in their development and implementation. They include:
1) University Affiliate Lunches
2) A 20-something Group
3) Taking steps to become a Registered Student Organization
4) A fall alternative worship experience in downtown Fayetteville.
5) Hosting a table recently at Razorbash.
6) Churches Starting Churches Conference
The Call Committee has received names of prospective candidates for the Pastor of New Communities from the synod. We are reviewing the profiles. Please keep the members of the committee and the candidates in your prayers.
The Call Committee members were installed on Sunday, April 29th during each service. We met on Tuesday, May 8th. We were joined by our newest members Paige Kroening, Don Brey, and Donn Johnson and brought them up to speed on the process so far. We received an update on our Ministry Site Profile which was sent to the synod office. Bishop Girlinghouse has made it available for potential candidates to re-view. The bishop is actively assembling a slate of candidates and will present them to the Call Committee once he has potential candidates. Pastor Clint identified some names of mission developers and pastors creating mission starts in the U.S. The Call Committee will be arranging mission learning events via Skype for us to connect and learn from them. The congregation will have the opportunity to join us at these events. We will share those dates and times when arrangements have been made. The Call Committee brainstormed ideas on getting started on a university ministry for the Fall of 2011.
We ask that you continue to keep the Call Committee, Bishop Girlinghouse, and the person who God is preparing to be the Pastor of New Communities in your prayers.
In Christ’s Name,
Call Committee for the Pastor of New Communities
As an outline of the new GSLC Campus Ministry initiative, Pastor Clint summarized the need and approach to this initiative in a letter to the Congregation in September. As a followup he reprinted his letter in a post to his blogspot. For additional information/clarity of this initiative, you are encouraged to read his letter (see link below):
In April, 2011 the Council voted to move forward with calling a mission developer and to form a call committee. At the October, 2011 Council meeting, Council approved the Call Committee (outlined below). As stated in Pastor Clint’s September letter, “Once the call committee is formed, it would work to gather input from the congregation, make use of the grant proposal as a guiding text, and communicate regularly with the congregation throughout the process.” The grant proposal can be accessed by following the link at the end of this page.
Pastor of New Communities
We are excited to establish a Call Committee for a Pastor of New Communities. Serving on the Call Committee are:
Terri Askegaard, Chair
The Call Committee and Pastor Clint met on Sunday October 23rd to begin work on calling a Pastor of New Communities. Terri Askegaard was selected as Chairperson. A template for the Ministry Site Profile was distributed. On Sunday, November 13th, Bishop Mike Girlinghouse met with the Call Committee and Pastor Clint to pray for us and to share more about his role in the call process. He also asked us questions about the qualities that we are looking for in a Pastor of New Communities.
In the near future this Committee will be meeting with the congregation to “gather input” on the process nnd procedures…..” and keep them abreast of Call activities.
The Call Committee respectfully asks for your prayers for:
- The Call Process itself
- Pastor Clint and the Call Committee
- Bishop Mike Girlinghouse in helping us with the Call Process
- The Pastor that God is preparing to become the Pastor of New Communities
