Women of the ELCA

What is WELCA? It’s an easy way to say Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Quite a mouthful, we know. WELCA is the women’s ministry organization of the ELCA. Our organization includes Lutheran women who gather in more than 7,000 locations in the U.S. and the Caribbean, for service, study, advocacy, fellowship and more!

WELCA embraces all kinds of ministries that support our mission of mobilizing women to act boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ. Our church celebrates the full spectrum of gifts that women bring, and women are encouraged to participate in all roles in the church, from being ushers and greeters, to serving on council, to being teachers and pastors. A woman’s place is anywhere God calls her to be.

Our group meets September though May on the second Tuesday of the month for Bible study and fellowship. We also meet as a quilting group to make quilts for each of our high school graduates. The quilts are presented to the students on graduation Sunday in May. During Lent we collect special offerings for Lutheran World Relief. In April we participate in a special daylong meeting for all WELCA members and guests of the churches of the Northwest Arkansas Conference and in the fall we participate in the yearly convention for all the women of the AR/OK Synod.

As a community of women created in the image of God, called to discipleship in Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world.
